Extra Mile New Effective Drug Treatment for Teens San Diego

Intensive Sports & Recreational Treatment & Behavioral Health Coaching

“Recent Evidence Based studies have found that physical activity produced a median reduction in mental health issues from 42% to 60%. Compared to the traditional status quo approaches of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, which produced a much smaller improvement, between 22% and 37%.”

Our expert Coaches tailor Active Recovery workouts to meet clients' unique needs, making them essential to recovery. Studies show regular physical activity can substitute for addictive substances by activating similar brain pathways, releasing serotonin and dopamine. This helps patients naturally regulate endorphins, improving mood and brain chemistry. Extra Mile provides evidence-based exercise programs & training to support coping skills, harm reduction, and daily physical activity.

Specific activities include:

↠ Customized Daily Exercise Programs

↠ Individual/Group Martial Arts Training

Therapeutic Expressive & Creative Art Classes

“Creative arts therapy is an umbrella term used to describe the professions of art therapy and music therapy. There is growing neurological evidence in favor of using creative arts therapies, specifically for trauma, which is based on the visual and sensational nature of traumatic memories stored in the brain without translation into the narrative” - Van der Kolk

Therapeutic expressive arts classes offer an approach to process and address past trauma and teach various forms of self-expression. Expressive arts activities help individuals develop self-acceptance, communication skills, attachment development, boundaries, coping skills, self-regulation, and independent living skills.

These classes integrate psychology with creative arts to promote personal growth and healing. The trauma-informed therapeutic approach is designed to be gentle and effective, particularly for individuals who may not respond well to traditional psychotherapy models. Through creative expression and guidance from the Creative Arts Team, participants can address past trauma and daily challenges, building resilience. Artistic ability is not required to benefit from these classes, as the focus is on the creation process rather than the final product. This approach provides a safe space for self-exploration and discovery. Expressive art classes also include reflection time to discuss the art and its relevance to one's life, allowing for meaningful self-expression. Various art forms are used throughout the process, and transitioning between different forms enhances the healing experience for both individuals and groups.

Therapeutic Expressive Music-Making & Digital Media Studio

“Music therapy is “a systematic process of intervention wherein the therapist helps the person to promote health, using music experiences and the relationships that develop through them as dynamic forces of change”

- Bruscia 1998

Our advanced Music Recording Studio offers music instruction with diverse effects for youth with substance use disorders. Active music-making and listening can activate dopaminergic pathways similarly to illicit substances, reducing cravings and improving mood. Music listening also calms the parasympathetic nervous system, aiding relaxation and decreasing anxiety. Additionally, music helps manage emotions and reduce cravings in people struggling with addiction. Studies show it can lower stress, boost motivation, and enhance mental clarity.
